When a movie as quality as Casino is made you can bet that the details of the film are going to be vast. With a director like Martin Scorsese it’s not only a requirement but a necessity that attention be paid to the very last thread of fabric on each character, word they say, and action they make. One of the most amazing things about the movie that we don’t realize had such precision is the wardrobe. In an excerpt from an old article in the LA Times we can learn a bit more:
To breathe new life into Lake Tahoe's Cal Neva Lodge and Casino — the famed Alpine stomping ground of the Rat Pack — Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison has tapped the trio of Robert De Niro. Sam Rothstein (Robert De Niro) is an expert handicapper, sent to run ritzy hotel casinos. Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) is his friend, and, when it suits them, sometimes his enforcer. Sam meets Ginger.
From costumes to casting, the look of “Casino” was crucial to Scorsese, a director renowned for his dazzling visual sense. For this three-hour portrait of the underbelly of Las Vegas, he hired more non-actors–regular folks–than he had for any previous film. Casting directors combed the streets of New York and New Jersey to round up background players and secondary characters–each of whom had to be outfitted. And since no one thinks of the 1970s as “period,” says costume designer Rita Ryack, the challenge was greater than anyone had assumed.
More than 7,000 extras–from go-go girls to hotel clerks–had to be clothed at a cost of $150 to $200 each, much higher than the Hollywood norm. And, though the 30-plus outfits worn by hustler-turned-trophy-wife Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone) were a mix of vintage and custom-made, all of Rothstein’s 70 costumes–not to mention those worn by Joe Pesci, Don Rickles, Alan King, Kevin Pollak and James Woods–had to be “built” from scratch.

The relationship between Ace and Ginger becomes so diminished that Ace gives her all her money and tells her to leave. The Feds make their move. They arrest all the bosses, Nicky's crew and raid the Gold Rush. Artie Piscano has a heart attack when the Feds search his house. The bosses order all the men involved with the casino scam (Andy Stone, John Nance etc.), murdered. Ginger gets involved with some lowlifes and has an overdose and dies. Ace survived the car bombing at the beginning because of a secret metal plate under the driver's seat. Nicky was the one who planted the bomb. Both Nicky and his brother Dominic, are taken out into a cornfield by Frankie and Remo Gaggi's boys, beaten with baseball bats and buried while they were still breathing. All of the major casinos and condemned. Ace goes back to being a bookie and making money for people back home. And that's that.

Revealing mistake: Near the end when Ace gets into his Cadillac, in the first shot facing the front of the car, there is a protective glass in front of Ace (the same width as the windshield) with the dashboard in between that glass and the windshield. Note the vertical edge of the glass is visible at the right side, and the rearview mirror's sticker on the windshield casts a shadow onto the second glass. During the stunt, the flames on the dashboard are between the glass shield and the windshield, keeping the actor safe from harm.(02:46:05)
Super GroverTrivia: Robert DeNiro was so adamant about portraying the character he was playing, that he had his suits that he had worn in the movie made by the same tailors who had made Frank Rosenthal's suits
Question: Sam and Nicky both refer to 'back home' but they do not explain where it is . I thought it was Kansas City because that is where the bosses are, but it's revealed that they are only there because 'its as close as they could get to Vegas without being arrested'. Does anyone know where in America Sam and Nicky are originally from?
Answer:Frank Rosenthal (the basis for Sam Rothstein) and Tony Spilotro (the basis for Nicky Santoro) were both from Chicago, so that is likely 'back home'.
